This post just made me realize that we are about to close out the first decade of the new century. The millennium. The first decade is already gone? I think I’ll be in the corner over there, with my head squeezed between my knees.

As Goes Halloween, So Goes Childhood

The article’s concluding paragraphs are too good not to copy:

“Our fears are so overblown they’d be laughable if they didn’t sound so much like the fears that are haunting us the rest of the year. Fears that have lead to parents to wait with their kids at the school bus stop, and keep them inside on sunny afternoons. Fears that make parents forbid their kids from skipping down the street to invite a friend out to play. That’s the everyday version of Halloween fear: The fear that we cannot trust our children amongst our neighbors for one single second because, who knows, they might be pedophiles just waiting to pounce.

If you want to see what childhood is becoming, look how at what Halloween has already become: A parent-planned, climate-controlled, child-coddled, corporate-sponsored “event,” where kids are considered too delicate to even survive the sight of a scary costume.”
Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lenore-skenazy/as-goes-halloween-so-goes_b_340163.html

These just scream Thanksgiving. While I’d love to see my daughter’s eyes light up as she watches those seven dwarves come home for the first time, with Disney’s marketing Snow White is no longer just Snow White, nor Cinderella, simply Cinderella. They are part of a collective idea, one imprinted on everything from training pants to lunch boxes, and selling the idea that sexual appeal is a girl’s most important asset.

Not that the messages conveyed to little boys by way of this empire is any better.

Not our own experience. Not our own observations of our own neighborhoods. The news, which, by definition, brings us the most shocking and unusual stories it can find and then repeats them in order to fill day after day of 24-hour news cycles.

It Takes Two To Tutor A Sparrow

It Takes Two To Tutor A Sparrow:
It may take a village to raise a child, and apparently it takes at least two adult birds to teach a young song sparrow how and what to sing.
