That’s the everyday version of Halloween fear: The fear that we cannot trust our children amongst our neighbors for one single second because, who knows, they might be pedophiles just waiting to pounce.

If you want to see what childhood is becoming, look how at what Halloween has already become: A parent-planned, climate-controlled, child-coddled, corporate-sponsored “event,” where kids are considered too delicate to even survive the sight of a scary costume.”

It’s a bit oversimplified, but illustrates my strongest objections to the Princess Empire. While I’d love to see my daughter’s eyes light up as she watches those seven dwarves come home for the first time, with Disney’s marketing Snow White is no longer just Snow White, nor Cinderella, simply Cinderella. They are part of a collective idea, one imprinted on everything from training pants to lunch boxes, and selling the idea that sexual appeal is a girl’s most important asset.

Not that the messages conveyed to little boys by way of this empire is any better.
